What to Consider When Looking For Window Treatments for Your Transom Window

Last updated 1 year ago

Transom windows can be beautiful additions to any home. This type of window is incredibly versatile and can be found above your door, garage, or other windows. Because transom windows are often uniquely shaped, they offer a unique way to accentuate your space. Here are some things to consider when looking for window treatments for your transom windows:

  • Consider the Size of the Transom Window

Because there are different types of transom window applications, not all window treatments will be appropriate. For example, a large arched transom over a picture window may benefit from no treatment at all. Instead, allow the main window dressing to accentuate the beauty and flow of natural light into a room. In contrast, smaller transoms can be dressed for privacy with custom-cut blinds or other treatments.

  • Think About the Shape of the Transom Window

Many transom windows have arch shapes. When used over an entryway, they can be accented with treatments that don’t interfere with natural light. For example, try using translucent materials for decoration, such as a row of colored glass bottles. Treatments like these diffuse and color the light in interesting ways.

  • Remember to Accent Your Décor

For transom windows above other windows, consider using a thicker or heavier treatment. You can also use the transom as a guide for accents or patterns when using a full-length curtain. The line between your transom and the main window can define where a valance ends in relation to the rest of the window dressing.
